Mısır Çarşısı

Cultural Heritage and Shopping
Destination of Istanbul

Located in the Eminönü district of Istanbul, one of the world's oldest shopping centers, a historical treasure... Mısır Çarşısı, a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture, is a commercial and cultural bridge spanning from Istanbul's past to the present. Bearing the traces of disasters, fires, and earthquakes, this bazaar has been reborn each time and has preserved its texture through various restoration works. Today, Mısır Çarşısı is one of the significant shopping destinations for both local and foreign visitors.

Istanbul's
History-Scented Treasure

The construction of Mısır Çarşısı was initiated by Safiye Sultan, the wife of Sultan Murad III (the mother of Sultan Mehmed III), in 1597. The bazaar, initiated at that time, was completed as part of the New Mosque complex by Mimar Mustafa Aga, under the patronage of Hatice Turhan Sultan, the mother of Sultan Mehmed IV, in 1664, 67 years after its initiation.

A Living Historical Artifact

Formerly known as the New Bazaar or Valide Bazaar, Mısır Çarşısı began to be referred to by its current name from the 18th century onwards. It takes its name from Egypt, where the goods sold in the bazaar were brought.

The bazaar has six gates. There was an additional floor above Haseki Gate, where disputes among the merchants and with the public were resolved.

RICH CULINARY CULTURE

Tastes unique to Istanbul

One of Istanbul's most popular historical and touristic sites, Mısır Çarşısı attracts local and foreign tourists throughout the year. Spices, herbal teas, coffee, nuts, dried fruits, fruit pastes, Turkish delight, sweets, breakfast items, jewelry, textile products, handicrafts, and more constitute the colorful world of this bazaar. Mısır Çarşısı is also an important indicator of Istanbul's rich culinary culture. The spices, sweets, and other products found here contribute to the distinctive flavors of Istanbul's unique cuisine.

Every detail of
Mısır Çarşısı enchants
its visitors

The area where Mısır Çarşısı is located served as a market even during the Byzantine period.

In the 17th century, Mısır Çarşısı became an important stop on the routes that made Istanbul the center of world trade. It survived two major fire threats in 1691 and 1940 and has reached the present day through various restoration works.

With its two-story structure, remarkable domes and arcades, six gates, and the historical muezzin lodge inside, it offers visitors a unique visiting experience.
